Supportive care
Ayurvedic support during chemotherapy and radiation
Treatment days are hard on the body and on the family. We help with appetite, nausea, tiredness, sleep, mouth care, digestion and worry. We plan that support around your treatment, never instead of it.
Call your oncologist first
A new lump, unexplained bleeding or weight loss, persistent pain, breathlessness, or fever during chemotherapy needs your oncologist or emergency care first.
Working with your oncologist
You continue under your oncologist. Our Ayurvedic care is coordinated with, and subject to, your treating oncology team.
Never start any Ayurvedic Medicine during chemotherapy or radiation without your oncologist and our doctor reviewing it together.
What we help with
Appetite
How we support: small, frequent meals of familiar food, such as soft khichdi, dal and rice. We plan them around treatment days and what your team allows.
Call your oncology team if: you are losing weight without trying, or eating little for several days.
Nausea
How we support: bland, room-temperature food, slow sips of fluid through the day, and calm meal times. Keep taking the anti-sickness medicines your oncologist prescribed.
Call your oncology team if: you cannot keep fluids down, or vomiting does not settle.
Tiredness
How we support: a gentle daily rhythm that plans rest early. Light movement only as your treating team has cleared.
Call your oncology team if: tiredness comes with fever, breathlessness, dizziness or fainting.
Sleep
How we support: a steady bedtime routine (Dinacharya), a quiet evening, and slow breathing practice (Pranayama).
Call your oncology team if: pain or breathlessness keeps you awake.
Mouth and throat
How we support: soft, cool, non-spicy food and drinks. Follow the mouth-care routine your oncology team gave you.
Call your oncology team if: sores stop you eating or drinking, or you see white patches or bleeding.
Digestion
How we support: changes to food, fluids and meal timing for constipation, loose motions, gas or a heavy stomach.
Call your oncology team if: diarrhoea does not settle, or you see blood or black stools. Also call for pain with no bowel movement for several days.
Ayurvedic Medicine during treatment
Many families bring home remedies, kadhas and “immunity” products to the bedside with love. During chemotherapy or radiation, some of these change how treatment works, or affect the liver, kidneys, blood counts or bleeding.
- Do not start any herb, kadha, powder or supplement on your own during treatment.
- Tell your oncologist and our doctor about everything you already take.
- Our doctor suggests Ayurvedic Medicine only after your oncologist and our doctor review it together.
- Many people need diet and routine support alone.
On treatment days
- Eat a light, familiar meal before you leave, if your team allows.
- Carry water and a simple snack.
- Plan rest for the day after treatment.
- Keep a short diary of symptoms to show your oncologist and our doctor.
Common questions
Does Ayurveda cure cancer?
No. Ayurvedic supportive care focuses on comfort, appetite, sleep, digestion and strength while your oncology team treats the cancer.
Does Ayurvedic support help with chemotherapy side effects?
Supportive care aims to make side effects easier to live with, alongside the medicines your oncologist prescribes. It does not replace them, and every person responds differently.
Will you change my chemotherapy or radiation plan?
No. Only your oncology team decides your treatment. We plan support around it.
Is it safe to take a kadha or an immunity supplement during chemotherapy?
Not without a joint review. Please ask your oncologist and our doctor before taking anything new.
